CHLOE STAR SHOWS OFF A SOFTER SIDE WITH HER NEW SINGLE “STAND THE SILENCE” - INTERVIEW
Rising artist Chloe Star has just dropped her latest single, "Stand the Silence," marking a shift from her usual edgy sound to reveal a more intimate side of her artistry. The track offers a raw, vulnerable glimpse into her evolving musical style, showcasing a depth and emotional resonance that highlights her versatility as an artist. Chloe Star takes great pride in her Persian and Indigenous heritage, both of which deeply influence her identity as a singer, songwriter, and advocate. Growing up between Los Angeles and her family’s reservation in San Bernardino, her childhood was often marked by chaos and a sense of displacement. In search of solace, Chloe turned to journaling and poetry, eventually channeling her emotions and experiences into songwriting. In addition to her cultural heritage, Chloe is dedicated to advocating for queer and female empowerment, pushing against the status quo with her bold rock and punk sound. Through her music, she challenges traditional expectations and creates a platform for underrepresented voices, celebrating individuality and strength. We got a chance to catch up with Chloe to discuss her new track:
How would you describe your music to a new listener?
Punk but also vulnerable, heartbreaking, and strong.
Your new track "Stand The Silence" is softer compared to your previously released tracks. Can you talk about this choice?
"Stand The Silence" is different than the rest of the songs I’ve released. I really wanted to challenge myself and create my own version of a ballad. I feel like this song really allowed me to be more vulnerable than ever before, especially musically. I’ve never created a song like this before so it was equal parts scary and exciting!
What personal experiences did you draw from to write "Stand The Silence?" What was the most surprising aspect in the songwriting process?
Something that I have been having a hard time doing is sitting in complete silence. I have been doing a lot of traveling and have been constantly stimulated so when I come home from traveling, performing, and recording, I really struggle to just be still. I feel these extreme highs, and when the lows come they just hit me so hard.
In terms of the songwriting process, I went into it thinking it would be so difficult to write a song like this as it's so out of my wheelhouse to write a ballad, but it actually ended up flowing really organically.
What do you hope for listeners to take away from "Stand The Silence?"
Understanding. My hope is that everyone knows that I also struggle being in silence, I struggle being alone at times, and at the end of the day we all deal with the human condition.
You recently performed in New York. Do you have any preshow or aftershow rituals that help you put on the best performance?
Pre-show I’ll meditate, call my mom, drink 3 cups of tea or hot lemon water, and then speak positivity into the universe or say a prayer.
What do you feel like was your greatest achievement of 2024?
My greatest achievement this year was finally getting the strength to believe in myself and show up for what I want to do.
Is there any artwork, music, movies that you draw inspiration from when you write your music?
I am constantly looking at artwork for inspiration! I create a lot of mood boards and those usually help direct my mind when it comes to writing, especially with imagery.
If you had to go on tour with any artist right now who would it be?
Lola Young
You have a lot of tattoos. Which one is your current favorite?
My favorite is my hand tattoo — the butterfly and the spider web! I am planning on getting a stomach tattoo done soon, so I'm excited about that!
What advice do you wish you had at the start of your career?
In order for others to believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.
