BIZZY REFLECTS ON HER NEW SINGLE “TASTES LIKE SHIT”
Alt-pop sensation BIZZY has struck a chord with her latest release, “Tastes Like Shit,” following the success of her previous single, “Default Setting.” This new track serves as a powerful breakup anthem, blending vulnerability with an honest, refreshing perspective. BIZZY opens up about the heartache she experienced and the resilience she discovered along the way. With over 15 million streams across her discography, it’s clear her music resonates deeply with listeners. We had the chance to catch up with BIZZY to discuss “Tastes Like Shit” and more. Here’s what she had to say:
For someone who has yet to listen to your discography how would you describe your body of work and who you are as an artist?
Ooh, I love this question. I would describe my discography as messy. I think it encompasses every emotion humans can have; it doesn’t stay in one lane. When I write as an artist, I don’t try to go for a sound or a genre; I just try to write exactly how I feel that day and be as honest as possible, which comes out differently each time. I try to be like that as a human and artist as well. Just authentic to whoever I am at that moment.
Your track "Tastes Like Shit" discusses the themes of a breakup. Is it based on your personal experience and if so do you find it was a therapeutic process writing the track?
Yes, it’s about a real experience of mine. Every song I have put out is about my life and real scenarios. It’s just total therapy for me when I write, which is why I love it so much. You get out your emotions and thoughts, and then at the end, you have made them into something beautiful that you can go back to any time.
What do you want listeners to take away from "Tastes Like Shit?"
With “Tastes Like Shit,” you can take away a bunch of different things because it’s so layered. The song is just fun and upbeat, so if you feel like screaming and dancing with your friends, it's perfect, but it also plays out a very real scenario of me getting humbled by someone who broke my heart. I love writing songs that sound fun and boppy, but if you listen, the lyrics are saying something kind of fucked up.
Through your videos including "Tastes Like Shit" you use vibrant colors such as blue. Do they represent something in your story telling? Overall what was the process of creating that music video in preproduction and on set?
I love that you noticed that! The colors don’t necessarily mean something, it's just kind of the colors I felt matched the song. The creation behind this video was so fun, though! We used plexiglass for me to paint on so it would start out looking like there was nothing in front of me, and then when I picked up the brush, it was kind of a surprising splatter of my internal thoughts.
How did you find your passion for music? Who did you grow up listening to?
Honestly, just listening to music on the radio growing up. I’m a highly sensitive person, so music makes me feel a lot, and having music growing up was always such a gift. It helped me understand myself, which I think is what pushed me to try it myself. I listened to whatever my older sisters were listening to because I wanted to be “cool.” A lot of Hillary Duff, Avril Lavigne, Miley Cyrus, and Ed Sheeran!
In June you played at KCRW's School Night and in September you performed at the Bowery Ballroom in NY. What's your favorite part about singing live and what is your dream venue or event to perform at?
Those shows were so fun! I just adore live shows. My favorite part is getting to connect with the audience and just having a full-on dance party. Music has always been a driving force in my emotions, and when I’m around other people playing hype music, all I want to do is dance, so to be able to do that to my music with people from all over the world is the coolest experience ever.
You wrote "Default Setting" with Gabrielle Scotto, Sarah Underwood, and Tony Chetta. Your track "Tastes Like Shit" was produced by Gus van Go. What role does collaboration play in your music career?
Yes! All those people are so incredible! Collaboration is huge for me. I can write songs all day long by myself, but I just love working with other people and seeing if I can beat the lyrics and melodies that I would come up with. I just want to keep learning and getting better. I’ve found that collaboration is the best way to do that.
Besides your own experiences, where do you draw inspiration from? (Media, places, books, etc)
Books and movies, but also from my friends. Whenever my friends come to me with problems or life situations that I haven't gone through, it always sparks creativity because I’m so close with them that it feels like we’re going through it together.
When you're not creating music or playing shows what are you up to?
I actually work on a horse farm! It is absolutely my favorite thing. I get to step away from everything and not be on my phone or in “reality” for a little bit, and I can just be with the animals and nature. It’s so peaceful.
What advice do you wish you would have gotten sooner in your career?
I always try to answer this question with a lot of thought because anytime an artist I would look up to would answer this question, I would devour the answer. My advice would be to do it scared, do it cringing, do it when you're tired, just do it. Every time I resist something in my career or feel awkward, I force myself to just go for it, and the majority of the time, I learn a huge lesson. (Or it’s just awkward, and that’s okay too)
